Juliet and Janet in the prizes again
Trophies won at Mawnan and Ivybridge...
Juliet raced the Mawnan 5K near Falmouth and was first lady home in 19:02.  Daughter Zoe finished in a fantastic time of 27 mins.  There were prizes of a night in the Budock Vean Hotel with Dinner, Bed and Breakfast for the winners of the mens and ladies races and their partners.  Matt Pullen had told Juliet of what was on offer and she travelled over to Mawnan to secure the prize.  Unfortunately for Matt, his night of passion was scuppered by none other than Dave Buzza who obviously thought Michelle was in need of a treat on account of his globe-trotting!  We're waiting for Juliet's report and of any other Carnies who took part.

Carol Culley also took part and tells her tale:

"Sometimes you get the opportunity to remember what a great thing running can be, apart from the obvious joys of winning and well done Juliet.
Team Thomas- that was myself and Thomas, seven years old making his first appearance at such an event. With the warm up and start over we set of at a blistering pace, for the first one and a half km, including the first hill, bless him, ignoring all advise to go steady.  We then did a tad of walk /run and then walk.  Lots of games and distractions needed here, perhaps a business opportunity exists here, 20 games to play while you run!
With the help of a banana from a fellow competitor and lots of encouragement from the friendly marshalls we made it to the finish line with a sprint.
Was I proud of him and also Samantha who also took part in a race for the first time.
Super star Zoe, well done to you, I did a second loop in 28.44 so you beat me."

Juliet's Report:

"Despite the wet & windy conditions, Zoe & I pitched up at Carwinion Playing Fields in plenty of time to test the toilet facilities before this 5km race. Pre-race nerves had certainly kicked in for Zoe.......PHEW!!!

The number of race entrants topped 200 which included children and dogs!!

It was nice to see some familiar faces amongst the locals, Don Bristow, daughter Claire & grandson Tristan, Alan Rowling & Dave Buzza (CAC) and our very own Carol Culley.

There seemed to be no let up in the Cornish mizzle but this didn't dampen the spirits of the runners as we started with a group warm up.

We were called to the start - my claim to fame - standing next to Dave Buzza and running the first 20 metres with him before he faded into the distance!

The course was undulating, mainly road with a short section of track through Trebah Gardens.

The support from the villagers was a boost for all and as the course had an out and back section it was good to receive and give encouragement to fellow runners. As I passed Zoe on my way back she shouted "Come on MUM" - obviously not working hard enough as I didn't have the breath to utter a reply!

The race was won by the favourite, Dave Buzza in sub 16 minutes - a minute per mile quicker than me!

The post race hospitality was excellent for such a low key race. We had plenty of choices to help reload the empty stores..... bacon butties, freshly made crepes, homemade cakes and all to be washed down with Skinners Ale or a coffee, if you preferred!

An excellent event - well done to all at Mawnan!

The Knowlesys faired well in the prizes! Juliet was first lady and received a voucher for two for Dinner B & B at Budock Vean Hotel (OK, Mike, your coming! Plenty of Brownie points earned there!!) Zoe won the girls 5-11 category and proudly collected her trophy and prize - Lawn Darts - donated by Trebah Gardens".

Meanwhile, Janet made the trip up to Ivybridge for the Ivybridge Beacon Challenge.  A tough off road race this one.  Janet finished 4th Lady and 1st FV45.  A fine result and could she be another Carnie to make the assault on the Exmoor Stagger next month?  Check back here for Janet's report on this race.
