Plymouth Hoe 10 race report

Kensa and Juliet winners with Team Cornwall...

Brass monkey weather met the 12 Carnies who arrived at the Brickfields for this year’s Plymouth Hoe 10.  Temperature readings as low as minus 5.5 degrees were showing on the car dashboard on the journey up.  For the Knowlsey’s it felt worse as they’d arrived home from a week in Egypt a couple of days earlier.

Juliet was running for Team Cornwall in the Devon v Cornwall race.  Paula had to pull out of the team due to injury.  Kensa stepped into her place to make sure the county fielded a strong team.

The race started at 10am and we were off on a loop around Brickfields before heading out towards the Hoe.

Both Juliet and Mike were feeling the effects of the climate change, flight etc as early as the first mile marker when Mike was all for dropping out.  A least their tans looked good!

Kensa was off and flying.  Rory and Chris (above) also made a fast start and alarm bells were ringing when they clocked 6:18 for the opening mile.  But with Rory having been clocking up 60 mile training weeks and Chris having had a good winter at cross country they pressed on regardless.  Stride for stride, go for it or bust!

Mike (below) ‘toughed it out’ even though he felt heavy-legged the whole way round.  He managed to knock 2 minutes off of his Blaythorne time which was a great result in the circumstances.  Must have been something to do with Kev’s ‘vocal encouragement’ on the last lap!!!

Ceri was trying to shake off her reputation for fast starts and was taking it a bit steadier than normal.  She even looked like a catwalk model in the finish straight!

Steve Marks was looking happier than expected after his beloved Norwich had been whooped 4 – 0 on Saturday.  Obviously the presence of Coventry boys Kev May and Pete Sargent made it a little easier on him (they went down 5 – 0!).  Sorry, boys.

Janet was favouring a hamstring injury and was aiming just to get round this year, 12 mouths after wearing the county vest herself.
Helston-ites Brydie Bray and Barry Drew were having a better time of it and putting in good runs.

Dennis (above) was also struggling with injury and was a good 8 minutes slower than his excellent run at Blaythorne.  He could still manage a smile though.
Wendy Marks found the course harder than Blaythorne but with a great run she still managed to run a similar time.

Whilst the Men’s team lost out to Devon by a single point, the Ladies of Team Cornwall were victorious.  Both Kensa and Juliet were in the scoring 4 runners for the team and received their awards at the Presentation.
Juliet received another award for being 2nd in the Female 35 – 39 age group.

Carn Runners ladies also won awards in the club team race for 3rd.  Kensa, Juliet and Ceri were our team counters.
