I'm keeping a log of the mileage that Wendy, Glynnis, Kathryn (Haylee) and myself are doing in preparation for Paris and London. Its getting a bit like “my run was longer than yours” and I think we are all daring each other to do 28 miles or something. I did the Comrades in my lunch hour, put that in the log!
What better way of stealing a march than waiting until Glynnis is away skiing and zonk in with a long one as well as a few brownie points for a GP race. And what better way to prepare for it than helping to plant over 80 apple trees on Saturday, your football teams 22 match undefeated run comes to an end and one grandson entertains you with Guitar Hero on the Wii while in an adjacent room another entertains you with Guitar Hero on the Xbox. Then you put Eurosport on and you see Glynnis Ski Jumping to a new Cornish record and getting an age prize in the Downhill! Top that.
One by one on Sunday morning we return the grandchildren to their recording studios and Jane accompanies us down to Marazion. We've had a nice bowl of porridge and syrup and Jane has had a few lungs of fresh air. Good preparation indeed young lady. We didn't have any wine gums left either.
Getting there early gives us the chance to run 3 miles there and back to Penzance, dodge the early morning doggy doos (was that a sea mist or just steam?) and at one stage chase the train. We get back just in time to get the Hayles Fargo stagecoach up to the community centre.
Our check in desk is empty so we must be the last and poor old Jane has to wear my old faded vest on her debut for the club. We find the Carnie table and its great to see some familiar faces returning after injuries and illnesses. And what looks like a reasonably good mens team out for the first time in ages. As usual not all 24 members of the team are ready for the photograph but we muster enough to make it worth 3MB on Carol's camera.
Of course we've done a warm up to make Jenny Mills turn green, so we wander along to be met by a car and horse box coming the other way. Can you imagine how embarrassed the teenagers sat in the back were? I bet they've scanned Facebook, YouTube, MySpace etc for the evidence.
Somebody shouts “Quiet, so we can hear Craig” which is normally a sign for the amount of chatter to increase to a level that GCHQ couldn't handle. Mind you, you couldn't miss that starting pistol, if thats what it was and the charge begins down the lane.
Wendy has me for company along the way as I re-enact my Rasputin role for the next six and a bit miles. We let everyone go past and then decide to pick them off one by one along the way. Just a training run was the order of the day but I guess the improvement Wendy has shown recently has carried over into her racing and despite 6 under her belt already and another 6 to come after the race she gave it a pretty good chase round the course and by the time we got to that hill she was in with a PB shout. With Sara and Helen Haylees hot on her heels and my barking in her ear she steeled herself for the 400 metres and got over the line with that PB.
Dash into the clubhouse, get your very nice Training tops not Hoodies as Dave Wilton correctly pointed out, goody bag, find Jane and Kathryn and back down the hill for another run to Penzance.
Even though this run is marginally slower than the first 6 this morning, we get back to the clubhouse and the presentations are still going on!
The good news is that Chrissy Hodge has won another prize. Now he has found his old form again, trying to match George at circuits has fired him up, he looks set for a cracking season, injuries permitting. And that goes for the rest of Team Carn. Most had left when when we got back but I am heartened to hear that all ran unscathed. And the mens team looked to have restored a bit of pride in the team stakes as well. Its Bon Voyage to Lizzie (below) who ran her last race for us before departing for Lincoln. You'll get some nice flat courses up there. Even the sea is below sea level at Skegness.

Thanks to Craig and his club for a good day. The weather was all you could wish for and I guess thats why the course record went. And I know our old mucker Mike put in a lot of hard work for his club as well.
Now we move on and we all need to pull together for An Resek Hellys and give Ceri a hand to show some more Carn hospitality. We only took on this race as somewhere to get rid of the soup! And this time we are only running the route twice! But I bet the presentations will still being going on when we get back as Barrie struggles to say Suzy Bosustow again!
