| The 'warm' weather and sun from previous weeks was taking a break and the masses gathered for the start were hoping for good times.
Thirteen of us were in the mix and squeezed up to the start line at 7.30pm. Over 500 runners charged through Cubert city centre and down the first mile. Turning left into the narrow winding back lane, the muggy evening was causing some of the runners to overheat - or was it that notorious sensation of going too fast in the opening mile?!
Carn's sub-3 hour marathon boy, Paul Sawford was the first yellow and blue making the turn with a fit Pete Kearney (below) putting in a great run just behind.

A bit of a gap until the rest of us with Andy M leading the way as Rob, Olivia, Pete D, Richard, Nigel and me grouped just behind him.
During last Wednesday's club run Kev May had remarked to me how some of our runners had improved in our absence. Tonight I would get first hand race comfirmation of that fact.

With Andy disappearing up the road, i was chugging back down to complete the first lap when Rob came alongside and powered up the 'hill' through the village. I caught a bit of flo yellow in the corner of my eye as we stomped up to the mini roundabout. Glancing over my shoulder and it was Olivia! What is that girl on?

Time to up the pace and i managed to shake her off and soon Rob was coming back to me. Passing the 4 mile mark and i was all over him like a rash. Unfortunately (for me), he had a bit of gas left in his tank and went off in pusuit of Andy. That left me to reel in a couple of legends in Alan Littlejohns (he'd done the Dartmoor Discovery 3 days earlier!) and the daddy of us all, Pete Sarge. Great to see you back Pete even if you needed to borrow Ollie's long socks. The grief you used to give that lad!!!!
Pete D managed his pre-race goal of breaking 40 minutes closely followed by Nigel. Apparently Richard blew a gasket on the second lap. All that pre-natal training, son!

New girl Dawn had a fantastic run in just over 41 minutes. Good race Dawn, the nerves are all part of it - welcome to racing.
Sandy was looking as cool as ever when coming down the finish straight unlike the majority of the runners (Viv Bray - again!). Judy and Linds S were coming into the field just after and recording good finishing times on another great evening at Cubert.

Thanks to all the Carn supporters again and for flying the new flag.

Thanks to NRR again for a top race and the momemto. Not opened the bag yet but i take it that it's a fold away picnic chair. Just saying last week i needed one of those (it'll probably be a fishing rod when i open the bag - tight lines!).
Final note: Never assume anything. Going back up to the car park we saw Viv Bray and mate jogging across the mini roundabout. "No wonder he's running so well", i thought to myself. Turns out they were running to the Chip shop!!!! There you go - i'd have been doing extra miles when what i really needed to be doing was necking jumbo sausage and chips!!
