Welcome  back from the mid season break to the 3rd chapter of the Carn Runners’ Long Run & Breakfast Club – this one is particularly special as it features a DoubleHeader.

Part 1 Run one took place on Sunday 8th January and was billed as an “undulating” route which would certainly make us earn our breakfast at Trevaskis Farm.  Well come on. Trevaskis is very well known for its extremely large cream cakes – we had to assume the breakfasts for be just as large and just as yummy so we needed some serious calorie burning on the way.

Starting at 8.30am at Tehidy Road Post Office – oh great, back to early starts again, which after Christmas was a shock to the system to say the least – the intrepid 5 runners who wanted to complete the whole route (9-10 miles) set off and headed towards the Duchy College, through Reskadinnick on the way to the first hill of many – the delightful Pugis !!  Talk of Christmas, New Year, fat club diets and my wedding dress filled the air as we nattered through the miles.  But don’t worry regular readers, it wasn’t long before the obligatory “facilities stop” by Carole – think it was mile 1.5!!!  and she disappeared into a field.  Wasn’t long before Pugis was behind us and we were heading down Cuttings Hill towards Mendarva which would take us to our next delightful hill – back into Kehelland.

Admiring the scenery, still talking of weddings and diets (not sure this group is suitable for men actually) we made our way up (some much more robustly! than others) Kehelland Hill.  On commenting to Ali that most of the curtains were still drawn in the houses we past, we then heard hollering from afar to check we weren’t too far behind – Carole was shouting our names through the silence.
That certainly got the residents up on a lovely Sunday morning !!

We were joined at this point by 6 more runners from our ladies running group and the conversation got very loud as we all nattered along through Polstrong and Penponds, hearing towards our 3rd delightful incline – the hill up towards Carnell Green.  At the top of this hill we went off road and heading down Consinsawsin Lane into the farm lanes.  Getting slightly more wet and muddy as we carried on we then hit a problem – a very muddy pathway blocked our way.  Nothing for it but to slow down to a walk and pick our way through.  Oh, by the way, we had been joined at this stage by Barry Drew who had started from Trevaskis and ran towards us, past us and then caught back up with us.  I am sure Barry was thrilled to be involved in the conversations of weddings, diets, houses and sports bras !!!

Back to the muddy lane – Carole took the lead and we all filed in behind her.  However, it wasn’t long before disaster struck.  Carole appeared to leap to a less muddy patch, freeze, and then fall sideways into……a large patch of brambles !!!
At which point, she just froze and shouted she was stuck.  We all rushed to her aid and I was the first to arrive, placing my (very clean newly washed trainers) in the mud beside her, reaching out my hand to pull her up, and when I took the strain, my (very clean newly washed trainer) sank completely in the mud !!!  Typical.
We pulled Carole to safety and carried on down the lane.  At the end of the lane a quick check on Carole found her with cut hands and arms but she was okay and we carried on. My apologies to Jo Jayes also who wore her new clean trainers on my off road, muddy run !! Sorry  Jo.

The last stretch of the route took us past Rosewarne Manor where we could smell the roast lunches being prepared – now I was starting to worry – would we actually make breakfast before they stopped serving !!  The muddy lanes and brambles had slowed us down.  Table was booked for 10.30am and we arrived at 10.45am and sat down at the table at 10.55am (after the obligatory photo) !!

There were 16 of us for breakfast (non runners including) and arriving 5 minutes before breakfast would be stopped, the staff were very accommodating and took our order quickly.

Now to the important information – breakfast.  A reminder of the scoring system is (1) Location, (2) Service and (3) the Actual Breakfast.  The location was nice. For those that know Trevaskis, it is a lovely building nothing spectacular outside the window but it didn’t matter.  We could gaze at the large cream cakes anyway!!!  The service was good – quick and cheerful and there was a good choice for breakfast – large or small portions, salmon and eggs, teacakes etc.  The Actual Breakfast however was good although having 16 of us ordering and changing our breakfasts got a little confusing for the kitchen but they were very happy to bring out extras and change plates that came out wrong with no fuss at all.  Therefore, after careful consideration and debate at the table, the following scores were agreed:

            1)         Location                       7 out of 10

            2)         Service                         9 out of 10

            3)         Actual Breakfast            7 out of 10

                        TOTAL                          23 out of 30

Part 2 ran took place on Sunday 15th January and was a practice of the Marazion 10k race route – kindly led by Carole.  So we woke again far too early for my liking on a Sunday (I haven’t had a Sunday lie in yet this year!!) and could hear the wind blowing outside.  I take my hat off to Ali who’s birthday it was on Saturday and here she was up early with us after a whole bottle of wine !!!  The
weather was nice, sunny but very cold.  It was bound to be blowing a hoolie down Marazion !!  Meeting at the Doctor’s Surgery at 9.00am, 9 of us set off for the starting line – very cold and yes, it was windy on top of that hill !!!  There isn’t actually much to write for this run – it was surprisingly straight forward with no disasters – the early conversation was again of my wedding planning (sorry ladies if this starts to get boring !!).  The route was very nice out in the back lanes of Marazion – a couple of sneaky hills that although not too steep were long in length and a challenge all the same.  I don’t know about my fellow runners, but it was quite nice to do the practice run so that I now know where I  have to gain time in the race to allow for the hills.  Carole warned there was an
uphill finish and she didn’t lie !!  Note for self for race day – try to smile for the finish line even though my heart will be pounding and my legs will be struggling by that stage !!!!!  This is where the spectators will be ladies – remember, smile !!!

Five of us continued for breakfast at the Godolphin Arms. Well, the view from the table was absolutely fantastic.  It looked over the beach, St Michael’s Mount,
Penzance and Newlyn.  Amazing view.  The staff were amazing too – very friendly and cheerful, happily taking our order and changing the set menu for our choices.  The food came out quick smart and was hot and very tasty. Carole’s particularly liked the herby sausage !!! No comments please.  Oh, Ali nearly
drowned Carole in tea when she knocked over her cup and a tsunami of tea headed across the table to Carole – who calmly mopped it up whilst not interrupting story telling to us – such a pro.

1)         Location                       9 out of 10

2)         Service                         9 out of 10

3)         Actual Breakfast            8 out of 10

TOTAL                          26 out of 30

This clearly puts The Godolphin Arms at the top of the league table  and very well deserved too.

As always ladies your company was 10 out of 10.  With Storm Force, Marazion 10k and rest weekends coming up the next long run will be Sunday 19th February
and this will be Camborne, Tehidy, Illogan Wards, Coast to Coast path to Smokey Joes.  This was will 3 days after my birthday so hoping you ladies will join me for a post birthday breakfast slap up.

Until next time………

Caz
