What would you say to someone thinking of joining?

If you are looking for great people who motivate, encourage and cheer you on, whilst reaping the benefits of getting faster, physically better (slimmer in my case), going longer distances, then Carn Runners is for you. There are people of different abilities and each person in the club is treated like a valued member.

What first got you into running?

As a teenager I was a sprinter, but injuries and other things stopped me. Due to health issues and a bad breakdown, I struggled with my mental health and weight for a number of years in recent times, always getting injured when going too hard with exercise, particularly the gym and trying to run again. Running was replaced by cycling for years as I did not think my knees could handle my weight anyway. When I moved to Camborne in 2024 I knew nobody, I didn’t know the area, and following a cycling issue I decided to try running again, had a few setbacks but haven’t looked back since.

What made you join Carn Runners?

As mentioned previously, I moved to Camborne and didn’t know anybody. Every time I went for a run on my own I got an injury, so I thought I would try Carn Runners as they are local to me, and from day 1, they have welcomed me in, and so I decided straight away that for social, mental health and physical reasons that I would join.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the club?

Being around the people and seeing how I have progressed, and seeing how others have progressed.

Have you taken part in any races or events through the club?

I have been in 4 races now, with others booked. I look forward to achieving at least the GP8 and also finishing my first marathon in 2026.

How has being part of Carn Runners impacted your running or life in general?

I have found my ‘people’ in Camborne. I am no longer reclusive and really enjoy being around people again. I have finally managed to get control of my mental and physical health again, and I get excited for weekends now, whereas before, work was my only solace.

Favourite local running route or session?

We have done a number of Social Runs on a weekend which begin near Camborne Station to Portreath, essentially a half Marathon at least every time we have done it. It is my favourite route as it highlights how far I have come in so little time, and every time I get to the end quicker than before, I see the progress.
