Buckfast Abbey Half Marathon & 5K – Tough Miles, Summer Heat and Tasty Rewards
This weekend saw Carn Runners heading to the stunning grounds of Buckfast Abbey for a race day with a twist—offering distances from a 5K to a full marathon, all on a challenging 4-lap course. The beautiful venue came with more than just scenery—there was also beer, a hog roast, and brownies waiting at the finish.
For our club, it was Janet and Sarah flying the flag—Janet in the Half Marathon and Sarah in the 5K.
Four Laps in the Heat – Janet’s Half Marathon
The Half Marathon consisted of four laps, each including its share of climbs and twists, making it as mentally tough as it was physical. Add in the exceedingly hot conditions, and it became a real test of endurance.
Janet took it on with determination, pacing herself well in the early stages before digging deep in the final lap to cross the line strong. On a day when the heat caught many runners out, her smart approach paid off, showing true race-day experience.
Sarah’s 5K Effort
While Janet was out battling through multiple laps, Sarah opted for the 5K—a single lap of the course that still packed in its share of hills. Even without the repetition, the warm weather and undulating terrain made it far from an easy jog. Sarah ran it with great spirit, soaking up the atmosphere and still managing a smile at the finish.
Great Atmosphere and Post-Race Treats
One of the standout features of the Buckfast Abbey races is the festival-style finish area. After the hard work on the course, runners could enjoy a well-earned pint, freshly cooked hog roast, and some of the best brownies you could ask for. The friendly volunteers, well-marked course, and scenic surroundings all added to the event’s appeal.
A Day for the Tough-Minded
Racing in hot conditions on a hilly, lapped course is no small feat. Both Janet and Sarah showed grit, positivity, and a love of the sport—whether pushing through 13.1 miles or tackling a shorter, speedier challenge.
Well done to Janet and Sarah for representing Carn Runners so well in the heat. A beautiful location, a great atmosphere, and plenty of post-run rewards made it a memorable day.
