Into the Hills – James vs The Saunders Mountain Marathon ⛰️🌧️
Mountains, mist, and miles. This weekend, James took on the legendary Saunders Mountain Marathon, flying the Carn Runners flag high in one of the UK’s toughest navigation-based endurance events.
This isn’t your typical race. Over two gruelling days, runners trek through mountainous terrain with a map, compass, and sheer willpower – carrying everything they need for a remote overnight camp.
Day 1: Rain, Fog & Navigation Mayhem
“Day 1 was difficult as it just rained the whole day and the visibility was poor from about 300m up.”
Classic mountain weather made the first day a serious challenge – with soaking rain and thick fog testing both physical endurance and navigation skills. It was a long, wet slog, but James pressed on, undeterred.
Day 2: Sunshine and Steep Climbs
Clearer skies on Sunday didn’t mean an easier route. With a brutal climb from 250m to 850m, followed by a wild descent, it was a proper leg burner – but James took it all in stride.
👏 Massive well done, James – for taking on the wild, the weather, and the sheer vertical madness of the Saunders. A proper adventure, well earned.
Fancy trying something different? Whether it’s trails, ultras, or mountain madness, there’s a whole world of running out there – and Carn Runners are always up for a challenge.
