Multi-Terrain Race Series: A Beginner’s Guide to the MTRS 🌿⛰️

Ready to swap pavements for paths? The Multi-Terrain Race Series (MTRS) is Cornwall’s answer to off-road running adventures – and it’s open to runners of all levels.

This beginner-friendly guide will help you understand what the series is all about, how to take part, and why it’s such a rewarding challenge.

✅ What Is the MTRS?

The Multi-Terrain Race Series is a set of off-road races held across Cornwall, usually from autumn through spring. The routes are a mix of coast paths, woodland trails, country lanes and farm tracks.

Each race is organised by a local running club and designed to test your strength, balance, and stamina in scenic, ever-changing terrain.

🏃‍♀️ Who Can Enter?

Any runner aged 15+ can take part. You don’t need to be part of a club, but many do it as a team effort (like us at Carn Runners!). You can run just one event or try to complete the full series.

To be included in the final standings, you’ll usually need to complete a minimum number of races – often 7 out of 12, though this can vary slightly each season.

📅 When and Where Are the Races?

Races typically run from September to March and are hosted by various clubs throughout the county. Examples include:

  • Tywarnhayle 10K (Perranporth)
  • Imerys Trail (St Austell)
  • Boconnoc 5K and 5 Mile (Lostwithiel)
  • Lanhydrock 10K (Bodmin)

🏞️ What Makes MTRS Different?

  • Off-Road Variety: From muddy fields to forest paths, no two races are the same
  • No Pressure: Many runners walk the hills and take it at their own pace
  • Scenic Courses: Coastal views, woodlands, rivers and more
  • Friendly Atmosphere: There’s great support from marshals, spectators and fellow runners

🌟 Why Try an MTRS Race?

  • Improve your strength and stability
  • Mix up your training with new challenges
  • Great intro to trail running without needing specialist gear
  • Experience lesser-known corners of Cornwall

☕ What Should You Expect?

  • Mud: Bring a change of clothes!
  • Hills: Not every course is hilly, but many include climbs
  • Weather: Be ready for anything from sunshine to sideways rain
  • Trail Shoes: Optional but helpful, especially on wetter routes
