Four Carn Runners swapped the usual race-day routine for something a little different this weekend as they headed out to the Isles of Scilly for the unique and memorable Scillonian Sprint.
Part race, part adventure and part endurance challenge, the event combines a ferry crossing aboard the Scillonian III with either a 5-mile or 10-mile run around St Mary’s, all before making it back in time for the return sailing to the mainland.
It’s safe to say this is not your average running event.
An Early Start and a Sea Crossing
The day began with the journey from Penzance aboard the Scillonian ferry, heading out across the Atlantic towards St Mary’s.
Even before the running starts, the trip itself is all part of the experience. The crossing can be calm and scenic… or, as many know, a little more lively depending on the conditions.
For the Carn runners making the trip, it all added to the challenge and atmosphere of the day.
Running Around St Mary’s
Once on the island, runners set off around the stunning roads and coastal routes of St Mary’s, choosing either the 5-mile or 10-mile distance.
The route may come with incredible views, but it also delivers plenty of challenge. Rolling terrain, exposed coastal sections and the pressure of making it back in time for the ferry all add a unique edge to the race.
Unlike most events where you can relax after crossing the finish line, the Scillonian Sprint comes with one extra goal:
Don’t miss the boat home.
Beating the Ferry Clock
Thankfully, the Carn crew managed to make it back to the ferry in time — although it sounds like there wasn’t much hanging around!
After the effort of the run, the return crossing brought another challenge, with a rough trip back to the mainland making tired legs feel even more tired.
Still, there was one very important reward waiting at the end…
Fish and Chips Never Tasted Better
After a full day of travelling, racing and battling the sea conditions, the group rounded things off in the best possible way — with some well-earned fish and chips back on the mainland.
And after an adventure like this, they were definitely deserved.
More Than Just a Race
The Scillonian Sprint is one of those events that becomes more than just a race result. It’s an experience, a day out and a challenge all rolled into one.
From ferry crossings and island roads to rough seas and post-run food, it’s the kind of event that creates memories as much as medals.
Huge well done to all four Carn runners who took on the challenge and flew the Carn colours over in the Isles of Scilly 👏💙💛
