You do not need a blue-and-yellow vest to come along to a Carn Runners club night. Wear running clothes and shoes that are comfortable for the session, and concentrate on finding a group that suits you. Club kit becomes a more specific question when you join and start entering races in Carn colours.
The useful distinction is between clothes for running with the club and official kit for representing the club in competition. Here is how to think about both without making your first race—or your first Wednesday—more complicated than it needs to be.
What should I wear to a club night?
For an ordinary Wednesday run, choose clothing that suits the weather, the route and the session. You might wear a favourite running T-shirt, shorts or leggings, with a layer you can remove when you warm up. There is no reason to wait until you own club kit before trying a run.
The Run Schedule shows what is coming up, including road routes, track sessions and occasional away runs. It also notes when extra visibility or weather protection may be useful. Looking at the session before you set off is more helpful than assuming every club night will be the same.
Newcomers can try up to four club nights free before deciding whether to join. If you are coming for the first time, the usual Wednesday meeting point is Camborne Cricket Club at 6:30pm. Check the schedule for any change to the normal arrangements, particularly for an away run.
What kit do Carn Runners members get?
The Membership Application page lists an official club vest among the benefits of joining. It also mentions a club T-shirt. These descriptions can be easy to blend together, but a T-shirt for general club use and the registered kit you wear to represent Carn in a race are not necessarily interchangeable.
If you have recently joined, ask at club night which garment is the official racing kit and how to obtain the size and style you need. Carn Runners says club kit is available on club nights. Asking before you enter or travel to a race is especially worthwhile if you have not yet received your vest or prefer to race in a sleeved top.
Do I have to race in a vest?
Not every event has the same kit requirements. The important questions are whether you are entering as a Carn Runners athlete, whether the event has club or team prizes, and what its race instructions say about official club colours.
England Athletics’ club-kit guidance says members of a team can wear different cuts of kit, such as a vest or T-shirt, provided the colours and design match. It advises asking the event referee if there is any doubt. That does not mean any blue-and-yellow running top automatically counts as official Carn racing kit. Check with the club which of its garments carries the appropriate design, then follow the instructions for the race you have entered.
This matters particularly when you hope to count for a club team. A personal result and eligibility for a team placing are different questions. Sorting out your entry details and kit beforehand lets you focus on the run rather than a last-minute conversation at registration.
What if I belong to another running club?
The Carn membership form includes an option for people whose first-claim club is elsewhere. If that applies to you, do not assume that running socially with Carn determines which club you may represent in every competition. Ask the club and check the event’s entry conditions before selecting a club name or choosing a racing vest.
There is no need to resolve competition eligibility simply to enjoy a Wednesday group run. It becomes important when you enter a race, seek an affiliated entry rate or hope to score for a team.
Make your kit work for the day
Once you know which top to wear, try it on during a normal run before racing in it. Check that your race number will be visible and that any extra layer you need will work with the event’s kit instructions. On a colder day, you may want a spare warm layer for before and after the race; on a muddy course, clean clothes for the journey home can make a welcome difference.
Club colours are also a lovely way to spot familiar faces. Browse Club News and you will see members taking on events together, while the Cornwall Grand Prix page is a starting point if you are interested in the local road-racing series. You can enjoy either a social club run or a race without chasing a podium: wearing Carn colours is about being part of the group as much as competing.
