What a turnout at track yesterday evening! On Wednesday 14 October, Carn Runners took on a tough but rewarding interval session built around short efforts and even shorter rests as the evening went on. Great work from everyone who joined in.
The session had two parts: first, 10 repetitions of 30 seconds at maximum effort followed by 30 seconds’ rest; then eight repetitions of 40 seconds at maximum effort followed by 20 seconds’ rest. It was a straightforward pattern to follow, but the change between the two sets gave the evening its challenge.
From 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off…
The opening set gave each effort an equal-length rest. Thirty seconds can sound brief until you are asked to give it your maximum effort, pause for the same amount of time and then do it again. Ten repetitions meant there was plenty of work in that first block alone: five minutes of effort, broken into short bursts.
One of the useful things about a timed session is that the structure is easy to understand. The clock sets the length of each effort rather than a lap time or a finishing position. On a busy track night, that gives everyone the same clear task while leaving room for runners to tackle it at their own pace.
…to longer efforts and shorter rests
Then the balance shifted. The second set called for eight 40-second efforts, with just 20 seconds’ rest after each one. That added 10 seconds to each effort and took 10 seconds away from each pause compared with the opening set. The numbers are simple; putting them together made for a demanding finish.
Across both sets, the session included 18 efforts and 10 minutes 20 seconds of running at maximum effort. That figure does not tell the whole story, of course: those efforts arrived in quick succession, with the tougher work coming after the first 10 repetitions were already done. It is the kind of track session that asks for focus right through to the final effort.
Most of all, tonight was a chance to recognise a great turnout and the work everyone put into a challenging session. Whether it was the equal work-and-rest rhythm of the first set or the sharper turnaround in the second, there was a lot to take on. Well done, everyone.
