Carn Runners member Dave swapped the usual race route for something far more adventurous recently, taking on the legendary Dartmoor Prison Break Challenge — an event that tests endurance, navigation, determination and resilience in equal measure.
Starting from Princetown Prison, competitors attempt to “escape” across Dartmoor, covering as much ground as possible within the event rules. It is a unique challenge that demands not only physical fitness but also the ability to deal with whatever the moor decides to throw at you.
Back from a Two-Month Lay-Off
What makes Dave’s achievement even more impressive is that it came after a difficult start to the year.
Having spent two months away from exercise, many runners would have eased themselves back in gently. Instead, Dave signed up for one of the toughest endurance challenges around.
That decision alone deserves credit.
Fully Committed to the Role
Getting into the spirit of the event, Dave even started the challenge wearing a prison outfit, fitting perfectly with the Prison Break theme.
The costume survived until Tavistock before practicality won out and it was time for a change. Given the distance ahead and the conditions encountered later in the day, that was probably a sensible decision!
Battling Heat, Rain and Dartmoor Conditions
The day started well, but as anyone who has spent time on Dartmoor knows, conditions can change quickly.
The heat, changing weather and existing niggles gradually began to take their toll. Despite this, Dave kept moving forward, carrying a substantial 8.4kg backpack packed with the mandatory kit required for the event.
That extra weight became particularly important when the weather turned and conditions became wet and cold.
One of the great things about endurance events is the camaraderie that develops along the way, and Dave experienced plenty of that. People on the route helped replenish water supplies, provided food and offered encouragement when it was needed most.
Nearly 43 Miles Across Dartmoor
By the end of the challenge, Dave had covered an incredible 42.88 miles, with a straight-line “crow flies” distance of 37.1 miles.
That is a huge effort under any circumstances, but especially after a lengthy break from training and while dealing with difficult conditions and injuries.
Events like the Dartmoor Prison Break are about much more than finishing times. They are about problem-solving, persistence and simply refusing to give up when things get tough.
An Incredible Achievement
From a two-month lay-off to nearly 43 miles across Dartmoor, this was a remarkable effort from Dave.
Heat, rain, injuries, heavy kit and the unforgiving Dartmoor landscape all tried to stand in the way, but he kept going and completed an adventure that most people would never even consider attempting.
A massive congratulations to Dave on an outstanding performance and a challenge that perfectly embodies determination, resilience and a sense of adventure 👏💙💛
