Laura and Andy Take on The Lap – A Windermere Ultra to Remember
For many, running an ultramarathon is the ultimate endurance challenge. For Laura, this weekend’s comeback ultra was all about testing herself once again — and what a test it turned out to be.
Taking on The Lap, a 47-mile race around Windermere on the fells, Laura battled conditions that made the course far tougher than she had anticipated. What was billed as a “fairly low-level trip” became a rocky, muddy bogfest that pushed her to dig deep and keep moving forward.
47 Miles of Challenge
The course circled England’s largest lake, Windermere, and while the weather on the day was kind, the ground conditions told a different story. Mud, bogs, and slippery trails meant progress was hard-won, every mile testing both legs and spirit.
Despite the challenges, Laura showed determination throughout, proving that true strength lies in pushing on even when things don’t go to plan.
Andy Joins the Journey
At halfway, Laura was joined by Andy, after some medical issues meant he couldn’t take on the full event. With the organiser’s blessing, he accompanied Laura for the second half, offering support and encouragement over the tough final miles.
In a wonderful show of community spirit, the organiser insisted Andy also received a medal at the finish — because in ultras, it’s the taking part and the shared journey that really counts.
Organisation and Support
One thing that stood out for Laura was the fantastic race organisation. Ultra events live and die by their checkpoints, and The Lap delivered in style — with the best checkpoint food she’s ever seen keeping spirits up when the going got tough.
Onwards and Upwards
Crossing the line after 47 miles of mud and bogs was no small achievement, and for Laura, it marked an important step in her ultra-running comeback. In her own words:
“There’s definite work to be done on my part, onwards & upwards!!!”
True Ultra Spirit
The Lap was a reminder that ultras are about far more than times or positions — they’re about resilience, teamwork, and community. Laura’s determination and Andy’s support showed the very best of that spirit.
Huge congratulations to Laura on completing her comeback ultra, and to Andy for stepping in to support and share the journey. Forty-seven miles of mud, grit, and determination — this is what ultra running is all about. 💛💙\
