The Looe 10 Miler is well known for being one of the most challenging races on the Cornish running calendar, and this year’s event certainly lived up to its reputation. With steep climbs, long descents and spectacular coastal scenery, it’s a race that rewards determination just as much as speed.
A determined group of nine Carn Runners made the hour-long journey over to Looe on race day, ready to take on the demanding course. Spirits were high at the start line as runners gathered in the picturesque harbour town, but everyone knew that once the race began, the hills would quickly make themselves known.
A Tough Course from the Start
The race set off at 11am, winding through the streets of Looe before quickly introducing runners to the first of many climbs. That early hill gave a clear preview of what lay ahead – this was not going to be an easy ten miles.
Like many runners who tackle this course, there were sections where running turned into determined walking as the climbs became steeper. But that’s part of the challenge and the character of the Looe 10 Miler. Every runner on the course was digging deep, pacing themselves and saving energy for the hills still to come.
Highs, Lows and Incredible Views
One of the defining features of the Looe 10 Miler is its dramatic elevation changes. After grinding up several climbs, runners were eventually rewarded with a huge downhill section – the kind that lets the legs fly but comes with the uneasy thought that what goes down must eventually go back up!
Despite the tough terrain, the route offered some truly beautiful views from the hilltops. Looking out across the Cornish countryside and coastline was a reminder of why so many runners return to this race each year.
The fantastic volunteers along the route also made a huge difference, offering encouragement and plenty of welcome treats. Jelly babies, Haribo and supportive cheers provided a much-needed boost during the toughest moments of the race.
A Different Finish This Year
For those who had run the event before, the closing stages of the race had a slight twist this year. Instead of the usual finish route, runners were directed along a slightly different path that included steps out of the harbour before the final push to the line.
After ten miles of relentless hills, that final stretch through Looe was a welcome sight. The finish line brought a huge sense of relief and achievement for everyone who took part.
Carn Runners Achievements
All nine Carn Runners who travelled to Looe completed the challenging course with determination and great team spirit. It was a fantastic showing from the club on a race that truly tests every runner.
There were also some brilliant individual results to celebrate:
- Tommy secured 1st place in his age category
- Janet also claimed 1st place in her age category
- Kerry achieved 2nd place in her age category
These podium finishes were a brilliant reward for the hard work and determination shown throughout the race.
A Race to Be Proud Of
The Looe 10 Miler is never an easy day out, but that’s exactly why it’s such a respected race among runners in Cornwall. It demands grit, patience and plenty of mental strength, but the sense of achievement at the finish line makes every climb worthwhile.
Huge congratulations to all nine Carn Runners who took on the challenge this year. Whether chasing podium places or simply battling the hills to the finish, every runner represented the club with pride.
