Mad Hatter Kaonolite – Soggy Smiles and Serious Grit from Carn Runners

It was wetsuits, trail shoes and a touch of drizzle this week as the Carn Runners swimming division took on the Mad Hatter Kaonolite at Blackpool Pit in St Austell—a multi-discipline event combining open water swimming with some seriously gnarly trail running.

This unique event, set in the heart of Cornwall’s clay country, is designed to test both body and spirit. With a nearly 2-mile swim, and a 15K trail run across challenging terrain, it’s a bold step outside the comfort zone for anyone used to pounding the roads.

Open Water Challenge

Several Carnies took the plunge into Blackpool Pit for the long swim leg. Cold, drizzly, and just a bit wild—the water offered exactly the kind of raw experience that makes these events so memorable. Whether new to open water or seasoned in the wetsuit, everyone embraced the challenge with good humour and grit.

Steve’s Solo Effort – Aquathon Hero

Steve went the full distance, tackling the entire aquathon solo. After completing the demanding swim, he laced up and launched into the 15K trail run, which included plenty of elevation, tough footing, and narrow paths carved into the rugged clay trails around St Austell.

With steep climbs and slick underfoot conditions, it wasn’t a run to take lightly—but Steve powered through, showing serious determination. No doubt the swim warmed him up for what came next!

Team Effort – Marlene & Kelly

Meanwhile, Marlene opted for the relay format, completing the swim leg before tagging in Kelly, who took on the running stage. The relay format is a great way to enjoy the event as a team, and both halves of this duo put in a brilliant effort despite the damp conditions.

Marlene’s strength in the water and Kelly’s ability to handle the hills made for a strong pairing—proof that Carn Runners aren’t just about the road miles.

Drizzle, Dirt & Club Spirit

While the weather was wet, the smiles were real. There’s something extra rewarding about events like this—where the course throws everything at you, and you come out the other side muddy, tired, and grinning. Everyone who took part showed true club spirit, cheering each other on and sticking around to support all finishers.

Well done to Steve, Marlene, Kelly, and everyone who represented Carn Runners at the Mad Hatter Kaonolite. You showed that endurance comes in many forms—and it doesn’t always wear dry socks!
