Some races are about chasing PBs.
Some are about chasing podiums.
And some are simply about digging as deep as you possibly can and refusing to give up.
That was certainly the case for Tony Chapman, who was Carn Runners’ sole representative at this year’s Dartmoor Discovery 50K.
Widely regarded as one of the South West’s toughest ultra-distance events, the Dartmoor Discovery challenges runners with 50 kilometres of relentless roads, hills and exposed moorland, demanding physical endurance and mental resilience in equal measure.
A Test of Endurance
The Dartmoor Discovery has earned a reputation for being much more than just a long run.
The distance alone is daunting, but the rolling terrain and strict cut-off times mean runners have to keep working from start to finish. There is very little opportunity to switch off or take it easy.
For Tony, it became one of those races where every mile had to be earned.
A Battle Right to the Finish
As the miles mounted, so did the challenge.
Tony found himself locked in a battle against both the course and the clock, pushing all the way to the finish line.
In the end, he crossed the line with just two minutes to spare before the official cut-off time.
That alone tells the story of the day.
There was no easing off, no comfortable finish and no spare energy left in the tank. It was a full commitment from start to finish.
Reflecting afterwards, Tony described it as:
“Almost as tough as my first ever marathon.”
Anyone who has completed a marathon will understand exactly what that means.
The Legs for the Long Ones
This isn’t the first time Tony has shown his strength over longer distances.
Time and again he has proven that he has the determination, endurance and mindset needed to tackle some of the toughest events around.
The Dartmoor Discovery was simply the latest chapter in that story.
Even when the odds start stacking up and the finish line feels a very long way away, Tony keeps finding a way forward.
An Incredible Achievement
Completing a 50K ultra is an achievement in itself.
Completing one of the toughest 50Ks in the region and making the cut-off with just minutes to spare takes a special kind of determination.
A huge congratulations to Tony Chapman on a fantastic effort at the Dartmoor Discovery 50K.
You may have only had two minutes to spare, but you got the job done โ and that’s what counts ๐๐๐
