Running Safely in the Dark: Tips for Autumn & Winter

As autumn sets in and winter approaches, shorter days mean many of us find ourselves running in low-light or dark conditions. While there’s something energising about a crisp evening run, safety should always come first. With the right preparation, kit, and awareness, you can continue to enjoy your runs without worry.

Be Seen, Be Safe

Visibility is key when running in the dark. Drivers, cyclists, and other pedestrians need to spot you quickly. Reflective clothing and accessories — from jackets and leggings to bands and vests — help you stand out. Adding a headtorch or chest light not only makes you visible but also illuminates your path, reducing the risk of trips and falls.

Plan Your Route

Stick to well-lit roads, paths, or trails where possible. Familiar routes can give you confidence, especially when conditions are poor. If you’re trying somewhere new, check it out in daylight first so you know what to expect. Apps like Strava or Komoot are great for mapping and checking routes others have run safely.

Run with Others

Joining club sessions or pairing up with a buddy makes running in the dark much safer — and more enjoyable. There’s strength in numbers, and having company means you’re less likely to feel vulnerable. Carn Runners’ evening group runs are a great way to stay motivated and safe.

Stay Alert

Leave headphones at home or keep the volume low if you must use them. Staying alert to your surroundings helps you react quickly to hazards. Be mindful of uneven pavements, traffic, and other people on your route. Trust your instincts — if a path feels unsafe, choose another option.

Carry the Essentials

A phone, some ID, and a small amount of money or a contactless card are good to have with you. Apps like Strava Beacon or Garmin LiveTrack can share your live location with a trusted contact, adding peace of mind.

Dress for the Weather

Dark evenings often bring colder, wetter conditions. Layer up with moisture-wicking kit and consider a lightweight waterproof jacket. Gloves and a buff can keep you comfortable when temperatures dip.

Light Up Your Autumn Runs

Running in the dark doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right kit, planning, and mindset, it can even be exhilarating. Crisp air, quieter roads, and the glow of streetlights make autumn and winter runs unique. Put safety first, and you’ll be able to enjoy them all the more.
