Susan Digs Deep to Conquer Race to the King

Huge congratulations go to Susan, who recently took on the challenging Race to the King event and showed exactly what endurance running is all about.

Race to the King is one of the UK’s best-known ultra-distance events, taking runners through some stunning countryside and historic trails. While the scenery can be spectacular, the distance and conditions ensure it remains a serious test of both physical and mental strength.

For Susan, it proved to be one of those days where determination mattered far more than pace or finishing position.

Reflecting on her race afterwards, Susan summed it up perfectly:

“Oh boy, was it a tough day at the office. Had to walk most of it but I ground it out and got to the finish. 33 miles covered in total.”

Anyone who has tackled long-distance events will understand exactly what she means. Some race days go to plan, while others become a battle simply to keep moving forward. When fatigue sets in, conditions become difficult, or the body refuses to cooperate, success is measured not by speed but by resilience.

Covering 33 miles is an incredible achievement under any circumstances. That’s well beyond the traditional marathon distance of 26.2 miles and requires hours of continuous effort, focus and determination. Even experienced runners know that once you move into ultra-distance territory, every mile has to be earned.

What makes performances like Susan’s so impressive is the refusal to give up when things become difficult. Many runners can push on when everything feels good. The real challenge comes when energy levels drop, legs become heavy and the finish line still feels a very long way away.

On those days, character takes over.

Race to the King has built a reputation for being a demanding but rewarding event, attracting runners from across the country who are looking to test themselves over a significant distance. Completing the course is an achievement in itself and one that deserves recognition regardless of finishing time.

Susan’s race serves as a reminder that running isn’t always about personal bests, podium places or perfect performances. Sometimes the biggest victories come from simply refusing to quit and finding a way to keep moving forward when every part of you wants to stop.

The Carn Runners community knows that long-distance running can be unpredictable. Training, preparation and experience all help, but there will always be days where grit and determination become the deciding factors. Susan demonstrated both in abundance.

Completing 33 miles is no small feat, and while it may have been a tough day out, it is another impressive achievement to add to the growing list of Carn Runners taking on challenges both locally and across the UK.

Well done, Susan. Your determination and perseverance are something every runner can relate to and take inspiration from. We hope you’ve enjoyed some well-earned recovery time and can look back with pride on a hard-fought finish.

Congratulations from everyone at Carn Runners on a fantastic achievement.
