There were fewer conventional running miles and a few more unusual challenges for Carn Runners on Wednesday 9 September, as members came together for the club’s annual Social Games and Pasty Night.
Held in place of a normal run, the evening offered a chance to swap the usual routes and training sessions for games on the field, followed by a pasty, a drink and plenty of time for a natter.
A fun run with a difference
The evening began with a structured fun run around the field, completed in pairs. Although running was still part of the programme, this was very much a social challenge rather than a regular club session.
The paired format helped set the tone for the night, bringing members together for an activity that was designed to be enjoyed rather than treated like a race or training workout.
Tug of war and wheelbarrow racing
Once the fun run was complete, it was time for two games that required a rather different set of skills.
The tug of war gave everyone an opportunity to work as a team and test their collective strength out on the field. Wheelbarrow racing then added balance, coordination and the potential for plenty of entertaining moments to the evening.
It was a simple combination of activities, but one that produced a great night and plenty of fun for everyone involved.
Pasties, drinks and a good natter
After the games, members settled down to enjoy a well-earned pasty and a drink. With no route to finish, pace to maintain or watch to stop, there was also plenty of time to relax and catch up.
The social side of the evening was every bit as important as the activities on the field. Club nights often give members an opportunity to talk while running, but the annual party night allows those conversations to continue without anyone having to tackle a hill at the same time.
More than running
The Social Games and Party Night is a lovely reminder that being part of Carn Runners is not only about training sessions, race results and weekly mileage. It is also about spending time together, enjoying shared experiences and having fun away from the usual running routes.
Regular runs may be at the heart of the club, but evenings like this are an important part of what makes it such a welcoming community. Anyone interested in learning more about the club, including the range of abilities represented, can visit our About the Club page.
Thank you to everyone who came along and joined in. The trainers may not have covered their usual distance, but the 2026 Social Games and Party Night still delivered a memorable evening for the Carn Runners.
