It was an early start and a chilly morning in the woods as six Carn Runners headed to Cardinham Woods for the popular Purple Gecko trail race. Known for its beautiful forest setting and challenging terrain, the event once again delivered a fantastic morning of trail running.
With both 5K and 10K race options, runners could choose their challenge, but whichever distance they took on, they were guaranteed a course packed with woodland trails, steady climbs and rewarding descents.
A Chilly Start in a Stunning Setting
Cardinham Woods is one of Cornwall’s best-loved trail running locations, and even on a cold morning it provided a superb backdrop for racing. Runners set off through winding forest paths, surrounded by towering trees and the peaceful atmosphere that makes woodland running so enjoyable.
Of course, the beauty of the course doesn’t mean it’s easy. The route includes plenty of hills and technical sections, keeping runners on their toes and making it a proper test of trail strength and endurance.
Despite the chilly start, conditions were perfect for running and the event was once again brilliantly organised by Purple Gecko, who are well known for hosting friendly and well-run trail events across Cornwall.
Strong Carn Performances in the 10K
Carn Runners delivered some outstanding performances on the day, particularly in the 10K race.
Jan ran superbly to take 1st place in her age category, showing fantastic strength on the hilly woodland course.
Steve secured 1st place in age category and an impressive 7th place overall, a brilliant result in a competitive field and a great achievement on a challenging trail course.
These results were a great reward for the effort put in on the climbs and the fast running required on the twisting woodland paths.
Carn Runners in the 5K
The 5K race also saw several Carn runners taking part, with Hobie, Zoe, Sarah and Judy all tackling the shorter distance.
The standout performance came from Judy, who ran brilliantly to finish 1st in her age category – another fantastic result for the club.
The 5K course may be shorter than the 10K, but with the same woodland climbs and trails, it still provides a challenging and enjoyable race.
Post-Race Coffee… and a Bonus Run
After the race, some runners made the sensible choice to stay at the Cardinham Woods café for a well-earned drink and a chance to warm up.
Meanwhile, Steve Zoe and Hobie had other ideas.
In a moment of what can only be described as running enthusiasm (or perhaps madness!), they headed straight off to Lanhydrock to squeeze in a Parkrun as well.
For most runners, one race in a morning would be more than enough, but sometimes the legs still have a few extra miles left in them.
A Great Morning of Trail Running
The Cardinham Woods race once again proved why trail running events like this are so popular. A beautiful location, friendly atmosphere and a challenging but rewarding course make it a race that many runners look forward to each year.
It was fantastic to see six Carn Runners taking part and producing some brilliant results along the way.
Congratulations to everyone who raced, represented the club and enjoyed a fantastic morning out on the trails.
