Carn colours were out on Dartmoor for the Tavy 7 on Sunday 25 October, with Janet finishing fourth in her age group. The rain held off for what our runners described as a great race. The wind gave them something to contend with along the way, but it was behind them when it mattered for the sprint to the finish. Tavistock AC’s seven-mile event starts at Plaster Down, just outside Tavistock.

Seven miles on the Dartmoor lanes

The Tavy 7 course follows undulating country roads past Pew Tor and Sampford Spiney, with the start and finish in a field at Plaster Down. It is a different sort of outing from a flat road race: there are changes in elevation as well as the exposed conditions to deal with.

Our account of the wind was echoed in a report from the event, which recorded 310 finishers. For the Carn runners, at least, the welcome change came at the end, when the wind turned from an obstacle into a helping hand for the final push.

Janet’s Devon race diary

Janet has worn the Carn colours across the Tamar before. She represented the club at the Totnes Ladies 10K in June and returned to Devon with Wayne, Dennis and Peter for the Totnes 10K in August. Tavistock has now added another Devon course—and a fourth-place age-group finish—to that run of club race days.
