Carn Runners were once again flying the club colours over the border in Devon, this time at the popular Granite Way 20 & 10 Mile races in Okehampton. Known for its scenic route across Dartmoor and along the Granite Way cycle path, the event attracts runners from across the South West looking to test themselves over longer distances.

With both 10 mile and 20 mile options, the race offers something for runners targeting different goals, whether it’s building endurance for upcoming events or pushing for a strong race result. Carn Runners certainly made their mark this year, with impressive performances and age group success.

Tony Takes on the 20 Mile Challenge

Taking on the longer of the two distances was Tony Chapman, who tackled the demanding 20 mile race. Long-distance events like this require strong pacing, endurance and plenty of mental resilience, particularly when racing over such a substantial distance.

Tony delivered a superb run, not only completing the challenging course but also securing 3rd place in his age category. Achieving a podium position over a 20 mile race is a fantastic result and a reflection of the dedication and training that goes into preparing for these longer events.

Sally Claims Age Group Victory

Meanwhile, Sally Powell took on the 10 mile race and produced a brilliant performance of her own.

Running strongly throughout the race, Sally crossed the finish line to claim 1st place in her age category, a fantastic achievement and a great reward for her effort on the day.

Age group victories are always something to celebrate, especially at well-attended races where the competition can be tough. Sally’s result added another proud moment for Carn Runners at the event.

Great Training for a Unique Challenge Ahead

For Sally, the race also served as valuable preparation for a very unique event coming up later in the year — the Scillonian Sprint in May.

Unlike most races, this event begins with runners catching the boat to the Isles of Scilly, before taking on a run around St Mary’s and then hopping back on the boat to return. It’s certainly one of the more unusual and memorable race formats on the running calendar.

Putting in strong miles at events like the Granite Way is ideal preparation for that challenge, helping to build the endurance needed for the race ahead.

Carn Colours Flying Beyond Cornwall

It’s always great to see Carn Runners members travelling to races outside Cornwall and representing the club across the South West. Whether it’s local trail races or longer road events like the Granite Way, Carn runners continue to show the same enthusiasm and determination wherever they compete.

With a podium finish in the 20 mile race and an age group victory in the 10 mile event, it was a fantastic outing for the club.

Huge congratulations to Tony Chapman and Sally Powell for their superb performances and for flying the Carn colours proudly in Devon.
