Carn Runners at the Polkerris Aquathon 2025

Another weekend, another adventure for Carn Runners — this time at the breathtaking yet brutal Polkerris Aquathon, an event that tests stamina, strength, and spirit in equal measure. Combining a 1-mile sea swim with a 4-mile coastpath run, it’s a race that truly showcases Cornwall’s natural beauty and unpredictability.

Polkerris, near Fowey, provided a picture-perfect backdrop with its clear turquoise water and rugged trails, but beneath the sunshine lay a real challenge. Waves rolled in across the bay, the wind whipped up just as swimmers set off, and the coastpath was, as ever, a mix of climbs, descents, and technical footing.

Steve and Jan take on the full challenge

Steve and Jan both signed up to complete the full Aquathon solo — tackling both the swim and the run without a break. The open-water swim required not just endurance but focus, as sighting buoys and battling through chop added to the test. After conquering the mile-long swim, both transitioned onto the coastpath, where steep climbs and narrow trails tested tired legs.

Their efforts paid off with strong finishes and plenty of smiles at the end. Events like this are as much about mental toughness as physical fitness, and Steve and Jan demonstrated both in abundance.

Team effort from Sarah and Jude

Meanwhile, Sarah and Jude teamed up to take on the relay version of the Aquathon. Sarah dove into the sea for the swim leg, powering through the challenging conditions, before handing over to Jude for the run. The handover was seamless, and Jude took to the coastpath with determination, covering the rolling terrain and finishing strong.

For the pair, it was a perfect blend of teamwork and friendship — proof that sometimes sharing the effort makes the achievement even sweeter.

Community, support, and smiles

No Carn Runners report would be complete without a mention of the incredible support that follows our members everywhere. A massive shout-out to Janna for being there throughout the event — cheering, offering encouragement, and helping capture the day in photos. That sense of community, both on and off the course, is what makes these events special.

The Polkerris Aquathon isn’t just about racing; it’s about testing yourself against nature, enjoying Cornwall’s coastline, and sharing the experience with others who love the sport. From the pre-race nerves on the beach to the final push along the cliff path, it was a day full of effort, laughter, and pride.

Looking ahead

With summer drawing to a close, events like this remind us how lucky we are to live and run in Cornwall. Huge congratulations to Steve, Jan, Sarah, and Jude for representing the club so brilliantly — and thanks again to Janna for her energy and encouragement.

Here’s to more adventures, more teamwork, and more sea-dipped, trail-running fun. 💛💙
