Sunday mornings are always special with Carn Runners, but this week’s Sunday Social run to Portreath had a little bit of everything — multiple distance options, birthday celebrations, unexpected entertainment, and plenty of laughs along the way.
With routes offering various distances, the run catered for everyone, from those heading out for steady social miles to runners stretching things further. At the top end of the scale was a half marathon distance, completed in celebration of Antony’s birthday — a brilliant way to mark the occasion and a reminder that there’s no better birthday present than good company and a few extra miles.
Celebrating with Miles
The group set off in good spirits, enjoying calm conditions and a relaxed pace that allowed plenty of conversation as the miles ticked by. The Portreath route is a firm favourite for Sunday socials, offering a mix of roads, coastal air, and familiar landmarks that make the distance feel manageable — even when it stretches into double figures.
For those taking on the half marathon, the run was a chance to combine celebration with achievement. There were plenty of birthday wishes shared en route, with Antony powering through the miles supported by fellow Carnies, proving once again that running together makes even the longer distances more enjoyable.
Drama on the Route
No Carn Runners social would be complete without a bit of unexpected entertainment — and this week certainly delivered. Drama was kindly provided by Bex, keeping spirits high and giving the group something to laugh about as they moved through the route. Details may vary depending on who you ask, but safe to say it added to the fun and ensured the run won’t be forgotten any time soon.
Adding to the spectacle was an encounter with a very large convoy of Christmas Land Rovers, fully decked out and clearly enjoying their festive outing. The runners and drivers seemed equally entertained, with plenty of horn honking exchanged and mutual encouragement shared — a perfect example of how running can bring smiles to everyone you pass, not just those in the group.
The Social Side That Makes It Special
Runs like this perfectly capture what the Sunday Social is all about. It’s not about pace, pressure, or performance — it’s about turning up, running together, and enjoying whatever the morning throws at you. From birthday celebrations to festive convoys, the shared experiences become just as important as the miles themselves.
The mix of distances meant everyone could finish feeling accomplished, whether that meant completing a half marathon or enjoying a steady social loop. Conversations flowed, laughter carried across the group, and the sense of community was as strong as ever.
A Lovely Morning All Round
As the group wrapped up their runs, there was a real feeling that this was one of those Sundays that reminds us why we love club running. Good routes, good people, and plenty of stories to take home.
A big thank you to everyone who came along and made the morning what it was. And a special happy birthday to Antony — a half marathon is a pretty great way to celebrate! 🎂💛💙
Here’s to many more Sunday socials filled with miles, memories, and the occasional unexpected convoy.
